Asthma is a common atopic disorder characterizedby airway inflammation, hyperresponsiveness, and reversible airway obstruction. Asthma causes episodes of wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath. It can be triggered by inhaled allergens, stress, exercise, cold air, or can be a symptom of food sensitivity.

Diet – Asthma

Asthma may improve if food sensitivities are diagnosed and offending foods eliminated. Diets high in sodium may increase reactivity of the bronchi to histamine, thus asthmatics should minimize salt intake. Asthmatics should also avoid foods containing sulfite additives. Sulfites are added as preservatives to certain fresh vegetables, salads, potatoes, and wine and can trigger asthma.

Micronutrients – Asthma:

  • Vitamin C 1–2 g Increases breakdown of histamine produced in the asthmatic response and reduces frequency and severity of asthma.2,6 Particularly effective against asthma triggered by exercise
  • Omega-3 fatty acids 2–4 g as fishoil capsules Reduces inflammation and may decrease symptoms
  • Magnesium 400 mg Can reduce severity of attacks and improve lung function.7,8 Magnesium deficiency is common among asthmatics
  • Vitamin B6 50–100 mg May reduce frequency and severity of asthmatic attacks
  • Vitamin B12 50–100 μg May reduce frequency and severity of asthmatic attacks, particularly those triggered by sulfites in foods
